Motivation Monday | Goals, Goals, and More Goals

You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.
— Michael Jordan
The Qualifying Standards for Worlds were released last week, and all around the land track and field athletes proclaimed "It's on".

And for the first time in my life, I was one of them.  I've had my goals for the year already figured out since the summer (I based them on the B standards for the last outdoor world championships), and I'm proud of them.  They're pretty close to the actual standards for this year (only a few thousandths of a second off), and they're do-able for me (in my opinion).

I've always been one to hide my goals from myself and others, or to not make them at all.  I'd write down in the corner of a notebook page some goals I'd want achieve, and then I'd never see them again.  If someone asked me what my goals were, I'd simply reply "I just want to do my best". This was to avoid any kind of disappointment that might arise if I didn't achieve them.  I was safeguarding myself from failure.  But, maybe not making them at all was just another way of holding myself back, a failure in its own sense?

This year I'm trying something new.  I'm not announcing my goals from the rooftops, but if someone asks about them, I'll voice them.  I've made a personal vision board for my room as well, so I have the constant reminder of exactly what I'm trying to achieve this year on the track.  Small steps, Gemma, small steps. *pats self on back*

What do you guys think?  Do you make goals for yourself?  If you do, do you share them with others?
